The Meaning
In February of 1978 I stood on what may as well have been Platform 9 3/4 ready to enter an enchanting world I could hardly imagine. In reality, I simply crossed the threshold to a dorm room in the coed Milliken Hall at Middlebury College as a “February Freshman.” Randy Kaufman and I greeted each other, new roommates about to embark on the Hogwart’s Express, two of a handful of “Febs,” this special band of brothers and sisters admitted to the small Vermont liberal arts school midway through the year. Only magic could have conjured the resulting, 40+ year friendship.
We have travelled through some mystical places and fought off terrifying demons together. We have grown apart and come together, and held each other’s hands and lent ears and shoulders through marriages, divorces, births, deaths, illnesses, crises, and of course times of joy and celebration. We are family.
It is, therefore, deeply moving and quite an honour that Randy asked that I write her first guest essay for her blog, Grit with Grace. Randy remains one of the smartest people I know, in many different ways. I am so proud of her most recent endeavour working with people to achieve their personal goals through finance, Aker Advisors (https://akeradvisors.com/).
Who would have imagined, as we sat in that concrete-walled double, back to back at our desks, staring at and threatening to throw our calculus books out the window, that today we would present the first of what we hope are many future collaborations. Thank you, Randy, for your friendship, your support, and this opportunity. I look forward to all the new adventures on our journey together.
Here is that essay, in which I attempt to discover The Meaning: https://randykaufman.com/blog/guest-post-the-meaning-by-diane-meyer-lowman
